Social media content strategy vs SEO content strategy – which is better for traffic generation?

SEO vs Social Media – which is the best content strategy for traffic generation?

Posted on March 22, 2024

[Updated 22nd June 2024] They say that ‘content is king’. In the past that meant producing Search Engine Optimized blog posts with the right ‘key words’, to, hopefully, rank well in Google. At the same time social media sites like Facebook and Pinterest were (and are) being used to deliver traffic. So, the debate around SEO vs Social Media has always been hotly contested one.

But recent changes in Google’s algorithms have been quite impactful. It’s clear that while SEO will always have a role in traffic generation there is a growing emphasis on having a robust social media content strategy, as well. So, the debate around SEO vs Social Media, and which is the best content strategy for traffic generation, is perhaps more relevant than it was when I first wrote this article.

Furthermore, if your site does not rank in the first, say, 10 results for a particular search query, your site is unlikely to be found.

SEO vs Social Media today – A brief summary

The web has always been changing and developing. But the recent changes to Google Search are particularly important.

Google now places a significant emphasis on user experience metrics, such as loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability.

Google’s algorithms, including BERT and MUM, are increasingly sophisticated in understanding natural language and context, which improves their ability to deliver relevant search results. And Google’s focus on high-quality content from authoritative sources ‘E-A-T’ (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is only going to grow and grow. So, content that demonstrates expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness is more likely to rank well.

Using structured data to help Google understand the content on your pages can improve visibility in search results through rich snippets and other SERP features.

Additionally, with the majority of online searches now happening on mobile devices, Google predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. So we need to ensure that our website is mobile-friendly. Furthermore, the prominence of video content in search results is increasing, and visual search is becoming more sophisticated.

In light of Google’s recent updates, both social media and SEO have become essential for a comprehensive content strategy. The SEO vs Social Media debate about which is better at generating traffic has lost a lot of its relevance. SEO remains crucial for long-term, sustainable traffic generation, particularly with a focus on user experience and quality content. Social media is vital for immediate engagement, brand awareness, and leveraging diverse content formats like video.

So today, debate not about SEO vs Social Media, it about how to create an integrated approach that capitalizes on the strengths of both to provide the most robust strategy for traffic generation.

Your social media content strategy and SEO content strategy

Both your social media content strategy and your SEO content strategy are vital ways of driving traffic to your blog in 2024.

Let’s see how both strategies work together:

Stage of your blog:

  • New blog: If your blog is new, focusing on SEO might be slightly more efficient initially. Building organic search ranking takes time, but consistent effort can provide long-term, sustainable traffic.
  • Established blog: For a well-established blog, a balanced approach using both strategies is ideal. A robust social media presence can amplify the reach of your existing SEO-optimized content and vice versa.

Target audience:

  • Niche audience: If your target audience is a specific, well-defined group, utilizing niche social media platforms and communities might be more effective than relying solely on organic search.
  • Broad audience: Reaching a wider audience through SEO might be more successful if your content caters to broader interests or trending topics.

Time and resources:

  • Limited resources: If you have limited time or resources, prioritizing one strategy might be necessary. Social media tends to be quicker to show results but requires consistent effort, while SEO takes time to build but can become more passive over time.
Every site needs a steady flow of traffic

Pros and cons of a social media content strategy and a SEO content strategy

Here is a breakdown of the pros and cons of each strategy:

Social media content strategy:

Pros:

  1. Social media platforms offer immediate engagement and interaction with your audience. Well-crafted content can quickly go viral, reaching a wide audience in a short time.
  2. Social media enhances brand visibility as users share, comment, and engage with your content. It helps in building a community around your brand.
  3. Social media allows you to showcase the human side of your brand. Personalized content, behind-the-scenes posts, and real-time updates can foster a stronger connection with your audience.
  4. Social media platforms provide advanced targeting options for advertising, enabling you to reach specific demographics and interests.

Cons:

  1. Social media content often has a shorter lifespan compared to evergreen SEO content. Posts may quickly get buried in users’ feeds.
  2. Social media algorithms can change, affecting the visibility of your content. Relying solely on social media means adapting to platform changes.

SEO content strategy:

Pros:

  1. Well-optimized content can generate traffic over the long term. SEO focuses on creating content that ranks well in search engines, providing a continuous stream of organic traffic.
  2. Users are more likely to click on a link that appears at the top of search results. Content that ranks highly in search results can be perceived as more trustworthy, more current or even as coming from a more authoritative source than those appearing lower in the results. .
  3. SEO content can be evergreen, addressing users’ needs over time. This type of content remains relevant and continues to attract visitors even months or years after publication.
  4. EO allows you to target specific keywords related to your niche or industry, ensuring your content aligns with what users are searching for.

Cons:

  1. SEO strategies take time to yield results. It may take weeks or months before your content starts ranking well in search engines.
  2. SEO requires continuous effort to keep up with algorithm changes, keyword trends, and competitive landscapes.

SEO vs Social Media – why having a combination of a social media content strategy and a SEO content strategy is best.

The ideal approach requires a combination of both strategies.

The reasons for this are simple:

Perhaps the best reason is the most obvious, too. Social media and SEO can work very well together. Sharing SEO-optimized content on social media platforms can boost its initial visibility, and social signals (likes, shares, etc.) may positively impact SEO.

When you share SEO-optimized content on social media platforms, you’re tapping into the immediate engagement and sharing potential of these networks. And, social signals such as likes, shares, comments, and click-throughs from social media platforms contribute positively to search engine algorithms. Search engines may interpret these signals as indicators of content relevance and quality.

Relying solely on one strategy can also be very risky. Relying on one strategy, be it social media or SEO, exposes your online presence to risks associated with changes in algorithms, policies, or trends on specific platforms.

Bloggers who relied on Google for their traffic often found themselves losing traffic as a result of Google’s recent changes.

So, diversification, which involves using multiple channels for traffic generation and reducing dependence on any single source, means that changes in algorithms or trends on one platform won’t have a drastic impact on your overall traffic. This approach provides a safety net in case one channel experiences a decline in effectiveness or undergoes significant changes.

Social media is excellent for building a community and engaging with your audience. SEO focuses on attracting users actively searching for information. So, a combined strategy allows you to reach different segments of your target audience.

It works because social media and search engines attract different types of audiences with distinct behaviors and preferences. Social media platforms are excellent for fostering community engagement, building relationships, and creating brand loyalty. SEO, on the other hand, targets users actively searching for specific information, often at different stages of the buyer’s journey.

A combined strategy allows you to cater to the diverse needs of your audience, engaging them on social media while capturing those actively seeking information through search.

For example, on social media, you might share behind-the-scenes content, conduct polls, and respond to comments to strengthen community ties. Simultaneously, your SEO-optimized blog posts address the informational needs of users searching for solutions related to your niche. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive and inclusive reach.

SEO vs Social Media – Conclusion

The SEO vs Social Media debate is less relevant now than it was in the past!

In 2024 combining both social media and SEO content strategies is now more important than ever.

SEO builds a strong foundation of organic traffic. Social media amplifies its reach and fosters audience engagement. This combination drives consistent and sustainable growth for your blog.

Remember, effective content marketing is crucial for both strategies. Keep up to date with developments in search, as well as developing your social media presence.

Search has evolved and consistency and adaptation are key, so monitor your results and adjust your strategies as needed.
